Schengen Visas
Uniform European visa valid for
Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal,
Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Iceland.
Nationality requesting information:
As of March 26th, 1995, a new type of visa - the Schengen visa - was introduced by the following European countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands,
Portugal and Spain.
A Schengen visa issued by an Embassy or Consulate of the above countries allows the holder to travel freely in all of these countries.
Where should I apply ?
- If you intend to visit only one Schengen country, you must apply at the Embassy or Consulate of that particular country. You apply at the Embassy or Consulate in whose jurisdiction you are a permanent resident.
- If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, you must apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country which is your main destination.
- If you intend to visit several Schengen countries but do not have a main destination, you should apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country which is your first point of entry.
-
If you do not need a visa for the Schengen country which is your main destination or first point of entry, please note that you may require a visa for other Schengen countries you wish to visit. You should then apply at the Embassy or Consulate of the first Schengen country which does require you to have a visa.
Further Notes
Your stay is limited to 90 days within any 6 month period.
Please check each countries' requirements before assuming that you only require a Schengen for your European journey. For example Australians currently require a visa to visit Portugal.
You may be required to hold a return air ticket for some countries or other proof of onward travel.
Applying within the UK
If you are applying for your Schengen visa within the UK please bear in mind
- you need a minimum of 3-6 months left on both your passport and your UK visa
- not many embassies will issue visas to people who are in the UK on tourist visas of 6 months duration or less
